This story goes back a bit in the timeline somewhere between Complications over Coffee and Love Can’t Wait.

Corey sat on an empty bench and bent to tie his shoe. Where the hell was Turner? The plane wouldn’t leave without their goalie, but a delay made everyone edgy.

Kip sat on the bench next to Corey.

“Your late, dude.” Corey looked up. “Man, what’s wrong? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

“You know how Ethan was going to be our last child…”

“I thought you had the whole vasectomy thing scheduled?”

“It’s not scheduled for a couple of more months. Mandy ambushed me as I was getting ready to go.”

“Better she told you before you left then while you were gone.”

“She could have waited until I got back. Fuck man. She isn’t even sure, it’s too early to test.”

“You gonna be able to focus?”

“What, like you’ve been focused with the wedding planning and screwing your brains out?”

Corey curled his fingers into a fist. “I’m going to let that slide, because you are pissed at Mandy and we are about to leave on this plane.”

“Yeah, I’m an asshole. On a roll with that shit, too. Fuck, I should skip this trip. I’m not fit for human company.”

“Are you freaking out about having four kids?”

“Yes! Wouldn’t you be? I can’t wait to see your face when Nic tells you she’s pregnant.”

“One thing at a time. I’m still not sure I’m ready to get married. I know Nic wants another kid, baby, thing. But we’ve got Tanner and Jessa. They aren’t little, but I’m okay without all these sleepless nights everyone talks about.”

“Terrible twos. First day of school. Think of all your missing.”

“You sound like a girl. I only want to be with Nicole.” Corey shook his head. “This isn’t about me.”

Kip stared off into the distance.

Corey pulled out his cell phone. Ten minutes until they were supposed to board. He hit Mandy’s number on speed dial. She sniffed as she answered the phone.

Aren’t you supposed to be on a plane?”

“I’ve got a few minutes for you, gorgeous.”

“Judging by the time, Kip’s told you how this child is ruining his life.”

“It threw him for a loop. I’m guessing it threw you as well.”

“I never planned this. I was thinking of going back to work in a couple years!”

Kip grabbed at the phone. “Give me that.”

“Bye gorgeous, some ogre wants to talk!” Corey yelled into the phone before Kip yanked it away.

Corey grinned up at his buddy, while Kip glared in retaliation.

Corey leaned forward so he could hear Kip’s conversation.

“I’m sorry, baby. You really freaked me out. Four kids, it’s a lot to take in. I panicked. I acted like a jerk, a dumb ass. I wish you would have told me a couple of hours before I was going to get on a plane and be gone for a couple of days. Or after. No, I’m not sorry you told me, I don’t want you worrying about it on your own. Hold on, Porter’s listening in.”

“Hey, it’s my phone.”

“I’ll call you when we land we can talk more then. I love you, I will love this baby, too. Make a doctor’s appointment, for when I get back. Corey will watch the kids.”

It was Corey’s turn to glare and Kip’s turn to be amused.

Kip held the phone out. “She wants to talk to you. If you flirt with her again, I might hit you.”

“Hello, gorgeous.”

“Do you enjoy poking the bear?”

Corey laughed. “A little. You are screwing things up for me. If you have another kid, Nic’s gonna get that baby fever shit going on again.”

“I promised you I wouldn’t touch that argument. I got you married and talking to your mother, that’s as far as I can interfere. I’m not getting into the bedroom with you,” Mandy said.

“Oh, please, you act like you don’t have an opinion.”

“I do, but I’m not talking about it any longer.” Her voice got soft, “I’m glad he has you to talk to.”

Corey matched her tone. “He’ll be okay. We’ll blow off some steam after the game and he’ll come back to you happy as a clam.”

“Stay out of trouble.”

“Of course, Nic would kick my ass. She’s got me whipped and I’m quite glad of it.”

“Okay stop, you’re gonna drip that romantic crap all over the airport.”

“A few of them could stand to settle down, too. I suddenly get what you were pushing me for. I want everyone to be this happy.” He sat up. “I have two minutes, so I’m going to call Nicole and tell her how much I love her.”

“Oh god, I bet you sent her a dozen roses, too.”

“She more into iris and lilies. The flowers will be delivered to her work tomorrow.”

“You suck. Have a good trip.”

Corey ended the call and dialed Nic as they were summoned for boarding. She answered. “Blah, blah, financial,

Nicole speaking, how may I direct your call?”

“I’m about to get on the plane and I wanted to say I love you.”

“I love you, too. Have a good trip.”

“I’ll talk to you again when I land.” He ended the call.

Someone jostled him from behind. “Porter, you’re turning soft in the head.”

He turned and shook his head at Scott Jones. “Says the single guy.”

“Yep, single and loving it. With you off the market, I am the one the girls are looking for.” Scott puffed up his chest.

Corey rolled his eyes. “Someday, someone’s going to catch you and you won’t know what you hit you.”

“Me? Settled down? Never.”

Kip shook his head. “Better men than you have made the same claim only to fall.”

“Whatever dudes. I’m going to get on a plane. You can sit in your hotel room and moon. I will be out tonight, making things happen.” He grinned.
